Democrat Beto O’Rourke will hold an event at the Thurgood Marshall Recreation Center Gymnasium in Dallas to talk about children’s protection and gun regulation after reaching out to the victims’ families in Uvalde after last Tuesday’s school shooting.
19 kids and 2 teachers were killed after an 18-year-old legally bought two rifles and stormed into Robb Elementary School. The police entered the scene nearly one hour later after the gunshots started, and this event has deeply scarred the Latino community that was just preparing for summer vacations.
O’Rourke has been adamant on gun control and proper regulation of arms since the start of his candidacy for Governor of Texas, going against gun and NRA lover current Gov. Greg Abbott. Although Beto isn’t against gun ownership, he is all for universal background checks and the review of those who want to purchase guns.
He has been critical of Abbott, blaming him for the lack of legal action in Texas over the last seven years, with multiple devastating shootings in the state. He always states he is very sorry and is grieving with the victims, but never seems to take any actual steps to solving this pressing issue or even acknowledging that loose gun control is a big part of the problem.
Beto O’Rourke visited the grieving families of the victims in Uvalde days after the event occurred. He talked to the parents and listened to their concerns going forward. With these discussions in mind, he plans to talk to the people of Dallas later today about what actions need to be taken, and what he plans to do if he wins the race.
He also plans on tackling other issues besides gun violence regarding Texan youth: the worsening of the foster care system, the power grid failure, and the children living in poverty with no help from the state.
A big part of his overall campaign has been targeted towards fixing the issues that have remained (and in some cases worsened) under Abbott’s administration. Besides the points that will be covered in today’s event, O’Rourke also advocates for women’s reproductive rights and marihuana legalization, among other things.
