X/Twitter is now charging a $1 fee to new users in New Zealand and the Philippines to be able to post and interact with tweets. According to the Associated Press, this measure is designed to stop spam and fake accounts.
The program, named Not a Bot, will not apply to existing users and it would work as a new annual subscription method for new and unverified accounts. The company hasn’t said why it chose only New Zealand or the Philippines to test the program.
“This new test was developed to bolster our already successful efforts to reduce spam, manipulation of our platform and bot activity, while balancing platform accessibility with the small fee amount,” X wrote in a tweet. “It is not a profit driver.”
Some experts have said that this measure will not work, as it will stop people from signing up on the platform, and nothing stops scammers to pay $100 for 100 bots. The premium $8 subscription hasn’t stopped bots nor spam accounts.
The $1 subscription will allow users to get access to basic functions like tweeting, liking posts, bookmarking posts, retweeting, quoting, or replying.
Since Elon Musk took over Twitter, he has implemented changes focused on increasing revenue on the platform, such as subscription accounts and closing the free access to the API.
