Crystal Salcido was an English teacher in El Paso for nearly a decade. In 2017, an idea came to her, and soon after she decided to abandon her career in teaching to pursue that idea. That idea was the creation of a lock named Slon.
This lock, Salcido told KTSM-TV, is designed to secure classrooms in the scenario of a school shooting. Salcido said Slon means elephant because elephants are known to protect their little ones, just like teachers protect their students.
The lock consists of latches and is permanently attached to the classroom’s door. Salcido designed models for all types of doors you can find in an elementary school, from doors that open inward, onward, and double doors.
Salcido is in the process of patenting Slon, as her plan is to put this lock in every classroom in the Country. By now, every classroom at Anthony Independent School District, at Northern El Paso, has her locks installed after the Uvalde shooting.
