Monique Thierry, U.S. Chamber of Commerce vice president, said in a press conference on Tuesday that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is going to back, one more time, Democratic candidate Colin Allred’s reelection campaign. Thierry said to The Dallas Morning News that “born and raised in North Dallas, Rep. Allred deeply understands the challenges facing job creators, the workforce, and families in northeast Texas. He supports free enterprise and the American business community.”
Historically, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce backed GOP candidates but since the 2016 election, they started to support Democratic efforts in swing counties of traditionally red states. Dallas-born Allred is just one of the other cases where the Chamber has backed Democratic campaigns, for example, they are also backing Democratic Rep. Lizzie Fletcher from Houston.
It seems that this year Republicans are going to retake the House and possibly the Senate, but the Chamber is still willing to support Democratic campaigns in some key counties. Thierry explains this is because, since Donald Trump’s election, the GOP has turned more and more populist while some companies in America have turned more and more liberal in issues like abortion and LGBTQ rights.
